Fellows – Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine, CM Health
Middlemore Hospital is a busy 1000 bed facility, servicing a population of 750,000 comprising some of New Zealand’s most diverse communities. As a tertiary referral centre for major burns, orthopaedics, plastics (including hands), maxillofacial and general surgery, we are one of the busiest surgical centres in Australasia. A full complement of surgical subspecialties, with the exception of Cardiothoracic and Neurosurgery are represented. Obstetric services provide support for approximately 7000 deliveries, including a significant proportion of high complexity cases, per annum.
The Department of Anaesthesia, Pain, and Perioperative Medicine, Counties Manukau Health, (Auckland) is pleased to invite applications for 8 Fellowship positions for the year December 2020 – December 2021.
Our department consists of over 80 Specialist Anaesthetists (Anaesthesiologists) working over two clinical sites comprising 26 Operating Rooms. Rostering also includes provision of anaesthesia services to the radiology suite and national burns centre, in addition to leading acute pain rounds and preoperative assessment clinics.
Whilst large, it is a cohesive, collegial department with fantastic learning opportunities provided by enthusiastic, innovative and dedicated clinicians with a solid team-oriented culture.

This will enable you to attain your required learning objectives. Our clinical positions are ideal for provisional fellows or those with recent FANZCA admittance wishing to hone advanced clinical skills, and work towards gaining greater confidence in transitioning to independent consultant-led practice.
We have 8 ANZCA-approved fellowships on offer:
1 x general fellowship with a subspecialty interest in obstetric anaesthesia
1 x general fellowship with a subspecialty interest in regional anaesthesia
1 x general fellowship with a subspecialty interest in burns anaesthesia
1 x general fellowship with a subspecialty interest in peri-operative anaesthesia
3 x general fellowships (with exposure to all the sub specialty areas)
1 x pain fellowship ( full time pain training position)
In addition to clinical rostering, sessions will be allocated for non-clinical and administrative activities. All fellows will be expected to contribute to departmental audit/research/educational advancement or quality improvement measures over the term of employment.
The clinical anaesthesia fellows work within a 1:7 roster for after-hours call. The pain fellowship does not involve rostering in clinical anaesthesia.
Our pain fellowship is a full-time pain training position that is accredited by the Faculty of Pain Medicine of ANZCA. Preference will be given to current trainees of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, or those intending to embark on training. In addition to solid exposure to an outpatient interdisciplinary model of chronic pain management, trainees will also have the opportunity to be involved with inpatient complex pain rounds and our new transitional pain clinic. Other clinical or research opportunities may be available depending on stage of training and individual areas of interest.
Minimum Requirements:
Applicants should hold, or be eligible for, registration as a medical practitioner with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
For ANZCA registered trainees applying for clinical anaesthesia fellowship positions, applications will only be accepted for those who are in their Provisional Fellow Year (PFY), or eligible to enter PF year at date of commencement.
Applicants must have completed all Advanced Training requirements at commencement date unless specific College exemption is held. The CV provided should clearly document compliance with this requirement, with supporting evidence from the Training Portfolio record.
For non ANZCA applicants, an equivalent level of experience in clinical anaesthesia will be considered on a case by case basis. Further details can be provided on request.

The December to December timing of the 12-month Fellowship follows appointment patterns for New Zealand medical training positions; however exceptions may be pursued under certain circumstances.
