The Anaesthesia Simulator
What the Simulator can offer
The key advantages of the simulator for anaesthesia/medical training are as follows:
Techniques can be practiced with no risk to patients.
The management of routine techniques can be practiced.
Less common but life-threatening events can be experienced.
Video recordings allow trainees to study their performance critically.
Errors can be allowed to occur (and progress) without the need for immediate intervention.
The simulation can be frozen to allow discussion of the situation and its management
Participants can learn to use clinical devices on the simulator.
Different training is offered for different grades, as follows:-
Specialist Registrars
Year 1 Obstetric Anaesthesia Training.
Year 2 Anaesthetic Crisis Resource Management.
Year 3 Airway Management
Year 4 ACRM Medical Errors
SHO Training
A visit to the Simulator is an integral part of the “Introduction to Anaesthesia” course attended by all Novice SHO’s in the School.
Booking the Simulator
All trainees in the School are expected to attend the Simulator once a year, and to attend the appropriate course for their year. The Deanery no longer ‘top-slices’ payment from Study Leave budgets. This change (which was made in April 2006) now means that you will be required to pay to attend simulator courses from your total study-leave budget.
