Advice from London Deanery re Olympics

During the Olympic Games from 27 July - 12 August 2012 and Paralympic Games from 29 August

? 9 September 2012 there may be severe disruption to travel throughout London.

In order to minimise any potential impact on health service delivery, trainees are asked to bear this in mind in ensuring that they arrive at their training placements in good time. In addition, trainees should also be aware that training locations will have their own local arrangements in place during this period. Many trainee doctors, dentists and GPs will be rotating to new training locations or commencing training on or around 1 August 2012.

London Deanery advises all trainees take the following steps in preparation for this unique and busy period for London:

? contact your local employer to familiarise yourself with any arrangements during this period ? this could include restrictions to annual leave/and or working patterns;
? plan for travel disruptions and be prepared to alter your usual travel mode if necessary;
? consider making all or part of the journey on foot or by bicycle if practicable;
? be sure you know exactly where and when you are expected to be;
? ensure you allow more time to reach your destination;
? keep a number with you to advise your training location if you are delayed en route;
? check transport information daily ? some Olympic events will make London even busier than usual.

Letters confirming rotational movements and new starter placements will remind trainees of the above requirements, but if you already aware of your training location in August please do not delay in making contact with your employer to establish local arrangements.

During this period ARCP and recruitment activity will continue at locations advised in advance by the Deanery. Reminders will be sent regarding all activity, however please be mindful to allow sufficient travel time to reach the event.

London Deanery will be open as usual for the duration of the Olympics. Normal business hours of 9am to 5pm will apply.

The 'Research' Study Day will again be part of the EBPOM Conference
The details are yet to be confirmed - but the date is set - please book your leave

Please see below for details of a trainee discount for the other days of the EBPOM Conference - a bargin - and the chance to work at and get the conference for free - a total bargin. James

Would you mind mentioning to the trainees the special discounted rates we have for Trainees the other days of that week.

The can sign up for one day of EBPOM or the Great World Fluid Debate for £75 or come to both for £100 (so just £50/day) (www.ebpom.org).

I?m also looking for volunteers for the whole week for CPET, MCOM, LSoRA, GWFD and EBPOM. They get a free place for the day/s they come if they help with jobs such as registration, holding the microphones, getting on the CPET bikes for healthy volunteer tests, or just being in breakout rooms as a point of contact. Different jobs depending on the days, just ask them to wear white tops and helper sash we provide. They get bags, refreshments, certificates etc the same as a registered delegate. I need at least 2 / day, more on peak days of Wednesday and Thursday.

Thanks

AAGBI Council Elections / Roshan Fernando

Hi Everyone, I am standing for the Council elections of the AAGBI (Association of Anaesthetists of GB and Ireland) this year. If I could count on your support (if you are a member of the AAGBI) or better your vote I would really appreciate it. For those of you who don't know me, I am an obstetric anaesthetist working at UCLH.

My personal statement for the AAGBI Council elections is below.

Thanks again,

Roshan

Roshan Fernando
Consultant Anaesthetist
UCLH
07765 645640

I have been a consultant anaesthetist since 1994 initially working at the Royal Free Hospital in London and transferring in 2008 to University College London Hospital. My main interest is obstetric anaesthesia, being actively involved in the clinical, research and management aspects of the specialty for many years. I served as the Honorary Treasurer for the 2,000 member Obstetric Anaesthetists? Association (OAA) for 6 years and now sit on the national OAA committee as the chair of its Scientific + Educational Meetings subcommittee, responsible for 5 meetings each year generating significant income for the OAA to meet its charitable objectives. I have also worked for 6 years as part of the Obstetric Anaesthesia subcommittee of the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA) and am currently an examiner for the Royal College of Anaesthetists. I am on the editorial boards of 2 journals including the International Journal of Obstetric Anaesthesia and lecture both within the UK and abroad.

I would like to join the council of the AAGBI to continue to represent obstetric anaesthesia at a national and international level. I have extensive experience in representing the specialty and specifically hope to bring my expertise in developing the delivery of educational meetings. I believe that within the UK we need to do more to improve maternal safety and outcomes. Whereas obstetrics has led the way to improving the level of continuous consultant cover on the delivery suite, consultant delivered obstetric anaesthesia care has much ground to make up.

Two dates for your diary:

The College's annual congress will be held at the IET, Savoy Place on 3-4 May 2012. It has a great general programme with sessions on leadership and management, critical care, quality and safety, and cancer and the anaesthetist, amongst other topics. For the first time at a major College meeting, there will also be workshops on cardiopulmonary exercise testing and cardiac output monitoring. The NAP5 project (accidental awareness under general anaesthesia) will be launched at the drinks reception on 3 May. £300 for consultants, £200 for trainees for the two days including refreshments. Further details here:

Secondly, for those of you approaching CCT, the 3rd annual 'Becoming a consultant' course will be held on Friday 20 July at the College. It's a joint meeting between the AAGBI and College and has a great selection of topics to help you prepare for Consultant life. Further details here:

Changes to Higher Training and CCT

The GMC has decreed that if you accredit after August 15th 2012, you must have higher competencies in obs, cardiac, paeds and neuro w 12 months general duties (often time can be double counted depending on where you acquire these competencies) and 3/12 higher ITU signed off. If you do not, you may find your CCT extended.

If you cannot identify how you can get this, you need to see or speak to Dr Lila Dinner or Dr Alan McGlennan soon. Do not panic - there are ways to sort this out and many of you, on examining your rotations, will be fine with some minor form filling to do. However, a number of you will need to adjust your rotations. There is no way around this. We have not been given very much notice of this deadline. Forms for higher competencies are available from the school or RCOA websites - completion of unit of training (2010 curriculum). This applies whether you are on 2007 or 2010 curriculum.

In light of this, I have started to make some changes so please do check your rotation first.

Lila Dinner

Dear All,

the time is drawing to a close for nominations for the RCOA trainee committee. (Deadline March 30th)
It is a fantastic opprotunity to get involved with the organisation that governs your training (and takes your money)
College work is varied form helping to plan recruitment to organisinging educational meetings

The main role of the trainee committee is to:

?    To represent trainee opinion to the College Council;
?    To enhance and maintain dissemination of trainee information to trainees, via the RCoA website, bulletin etc;
?    To, when requested by council, provide representation on council sub-committees and working parties;
? To provide anaesthetic trainee representation on various external committees as requested, including the Academy Trainee?s Doctors Group (ATDG) and The Group of Anaesthetists in Training (GAT); and
? To actively participate in the professional development of trainee anaesthetists.

Having said this it also opens up opportunities to be involved with other aspects of college work

If interested and you have any questions please don't hesitate to get in touch via email through the school website or RCOA webiste

Voluntary Service Overseas - Anaesthetists needed!

I’m currently on an OOPC with VSO out in Ethiopia as an Anaesthetist. They are desperate for Anaesthetic applicants and are struggling to recruit so I thought I’d spread the word.

http://www.vso.org.uk

The post I’m in at the moment is frankly well above me, and I’ve told them this, but would be brilliant for anyone post-FRCA. Essentially I am the only medically qualified member of our Anaesthetic department in a pretty large regional hospital in Addis Ababa called Yekatit 12. My role is to help develop the service run by their nurse anaesthetists, revise their ICU and recovery services and provide a load of training all over the hospital. They also have some issues with pre-operative assessment and anaesthetic guidelines that need work. The exposure is amazing and there is a load of interesting ENT/MaxFax/Airway stuff here, largely due to the massive goitres, advanced pathology and trauma. I’ve even found a fibreoptic scope hidden away that works so you can do quite interesting airway and burns cases. For someone who wanted to the develop teaching or clinical governance bits of their CV there is just a mountain of stuff they need help with.

Several of the other Royal Colleges have Fellowships with VSO (RCPCH and the RCOG both send several trainees out - there are five other medical volunteers in Ethiopia with VSO and they are all on one of these) but there does not seem to be an RCoA one sadly. Anyone interested, give me a shout and I’ll put you in touch with right people at VSO UK. If you are particularly interested in Ethiopia then you can nominate this but they have a real global need so you could just see where they place you. My current hospital has so far been an excellent placement and they would love someone to replace me in August 2012 so if that sounds interesting then do get in touch.

Cheers
