BARTS AND THE LONDON NHS TRUST
LONDON DEANERY NUMBERED POST IN MEDICAL SIMULATION AND ADVANCED ANAESTHESIA
February 2011

Applications are invited for this post, which will place the successful applicant at the forefront of development of medical simulation training in the UK. The postholder will develop theoretical and practical experience in a variety of educational methods in the healthcare setting. This will include full-scale immersion scenarios using human patient simulators for single and interprofessional disciplines. Fellows will be given the opportunity to develop into skilled medical educators and advocates for patient safety.

Barts and The London Medical Simulation Centre is a flagship project for both the Trust and London Region.  The Centre uses a range of simulators as tools for teaching and training a wide variety of healthcare professionals.  Regionally, we are supported by the London Postgraduate Deans.

The post holders will participate fully in the development, organisation and delivery of training programmes, including Crisis Resource Management, and recognition and management of acutely ill patients aimed at medical student and foundation programme doctors. There are also specialist anaesthetic courses in difficult airway management, obstetrics and paediatrics. The post holders will be encouraged to undertake research projects primarily in educational methods and simulation applied to medicine.  The Simulation Centre will support candidates wishing to pursue an educational qualification.

Applicants should be ST5-7 anaesthetists with the FRCA (or equivalent) and have an interest in medical education.  The post is ideally for one year (negotiable) which can all be counted for training since this is a numbered Deanery post. The post is available from Feb 2011.

The successful candidate will be expected to spend approximately two days a week in the Simulation Centre. The remainder of the time will be spent as part of the Specialist Registrar on call rota at The Royal London Hospital that is 1:9 full shift, or working days in theatre.

For informal discussion please contact Dr Chris Sadler, Consultant Anaesthetist, Director, Medical Simulation Centre on 020 7480 4855, or Dr Helen Drewery, Training Programme Director, on 0207 377 7793.

Send applications in the format of a letter expressing your interest in this post, with an up-to-date CV to Lucy Hamer by email or post. The closing date for this post is 30th June 2010.
