Dear Training Programme Director,
Health Education England Review of ARCP
As part of improving the working lives of doctors, Health Education England launched a review of the Annual Review of Competency Progression (ARCP) in January this year. As part of the next stage of review, we have recently launched a call for evidence to further inform the emerging findings and recommendations.
The review aims to explore the totality of the assessment and appraisal functions with a view to ensuring greater consistency. It is considering both processes and outcomes, and assessing how the ARCP can best be utilised to ensure that safety and revalidation requirements are met whilst providing a process that can best meet the needs of trainees. To that end we are reviewing how trainees are asked to prepare for ARCP, the evidence required for submission, the operation of the panel itself, how feedback is provided from panel and how appraisal processes within different placements can support the process.
To date we have undertaken a comprehensive engagement process, including working closely with trainees, trainers, regulators, royal colleges and representatives from across the four nations to progress the review, and are developing recommendations through a model of co-production.
In order to help shape these recommendations, the call for evidence is an opportunity for trainees and wider stakeholders to express their opinions on some of the developing hypothesis and to submit evidence to be considered when finalising the recommendations. Specifically, we would welcome any evidence or feedback around the effective assessment and appraisal of trainees, including any case studies that highlight where the ARCP and appraisal processes have worked particularly effectively or poorly.
The call for evidence will run between Monday 7th and Tuesday 29th August and can be found at https://www.hee.nhs.uk/news-blogs-events/hee-news/arcp-call-evidence-now-open?utm_source=Emailstakeholder&utm_campaign=ARCPcallforevidence&utm_content=stakeholder
