UCH Ultrasound Guided Regional Anaesthesia Course - Friday 7th May 2010
An exciting one day ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia (UGRA) introduction course at the new University College Hospital (UCH) Education Centre. Hands on ultrasound scanning experience with live models in small groups. One-2-one instruction of in-plane and out-of-plane ultrasound needling techniques by interventional radiologists with phantom models. We have a really friendly faculty focused on teaching you how to have lots of fun learning this challenging technique!Download application form from website;

An Introduction to Obstetric Regional Analgesia and Anaesthesia for Trainees

Stepping foot on to labour ward as a trainee can be daunting. This seminar is aimed primarily at ST1-3 trainees and intended to provide those approaching, or in the early stages of, their first obstetric block, with the knowledge and confidence to deal with
regional analgesia and anaesthesia on labour ward. The seminar includes Powerpoint presentations with plenty of opportunity for
discussion, and practical exposure to different equipment and supervised practice
inserting epidurals using manikins.

Transoesophageal Echocardiography Course

Academic study day - 25th March
The National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia are holding a Study Day for Academic Trainees on the 25th March 2010.
This study day is intended for trainees who are currently in academic training (either research fellowships, post-graduate degrees or academic NTN posts) or trainees who might be interested in undertaking research in the future. It is a great opportunity to hear from leading academic anaesthetists in the UK and to learn about how to get involved with or make the most of academic training. There will also be plenty of time for meeting and questioning the speakers.
The day will also play host to the “Presidents Award for Postgraduate Research”. Trainees are encouraged to submit abstracts relating to research that they have already been involved with for poster display at the College on the day of the event. The winning submission will be granted the President’s Award for Postgraduate Research.

UCH Primary FRCA Course - 8th January, 10-11 July 2010
This exam revision course consists of OSCES, VIVAS, and small group tutorials, covering essentials for the Primary FRCA examination.The next course runs on the 8th January 2010 and will be held at University College Hospital, London W1. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Obstetric Anaesthesia Introductory Course
There is a one day ‘survival course’ in obstetric anaesthesia, which is aimed at SHOs / SpRs just starting out on the labour ward.
The course consists of lectures with a practical emphasis, followed by a question and answer session.
It is held at the Courthauld Lecture Theatre, Middlesex Hospital. Basic lunch / refreshments are provided. Further details can be obtained from Siobhan in the Centre of anaesthesia. ()
North Thames Foundation Course in Anaesthesia
This course has been designed to give ST1s in anaesthesia an introduction to the specialty, and to cover the core requirements necessary for the Competency Assessments which should be carried out after 3 months training. The course is held on Fridays. It consists of 5 weeks of classroom teaching at the Royal Free, a one day ALS/Critical care Workshop teaching and one day in the Anaesthesia Simulator at Barts.The topics covered in the classroom sessions include preoperative assessment, management of the airway, anaesthetic equipment, drugs used in anaesthesia, regional analgesia and dealing with common adverse events.
The cost of the course is £495.
The course is open to trainees in the North Central Thames School. Places are limited and the course is very popular. Trainees in other schools are welcome to apply if places are available.

Fibreoptic Intubation Practical Course in Colchester
We are running an awake fibreoptic training course at Colchester hospital. The delegates are the subjects, and to ensure 1:1 training, numbers are limited to 4 participants and two observers only. The course is running every two months and there are places available in June, October and December. The cost is £175 for participants and £150 for observers. All grades of staff are welcome-SHOs, SpRs , staff grades and Consultants. The morning consists of lectures followed by mannequin and model practice,during the afternoon there is supervised endoscopy and intubation. It is anticipated that each participant will perform three endoscopies and one intubation.More information is available at the website fibreopticintubation.co.uk

Fibreoptic Intubation Practical Course at UCLH
There is now a monthly one-day course, held at UCLH.The aim of the course is for registrars to learn how to anaesthetise the airway and pass a fibreoptic scope in an awake patient (each other!!). Basic training on cleaning & handling the scope will be included.

Core Knowledge Days
The School runs a series of Core Knowledge Days. North Thames Autumn Meeting - Dingle, Ireland
This is a three-day meeting, held in an area of outstanding beauty. The conference is chaired by Monty Mythen, Jim Down and Mike Grocott, and speakers are invited from London and the UK, Ireland and the USA. The Skellig Hotel, where the conference is held, is a 4-star 110-bedded hotel, with first class conference and leisure facilities.The conference program is broad-based, and there is a full social program and Partners Programme for non-anaesthetists. Sailing, golf, horse-riding and boat excusrsions are available.

North Thames Winter Meeting - French Alps

These meetings are held 4 times a year, jointly with the other anaesthetic schools in north London. They cover a wide range of topics, including clinical matters, current research and developments in anaesthesia, clinical governance and management. Talks are regularly included on the appointment procedure for Consultant posts. Once a year the meeting is devoted to current research going on within the School.We consider that attendance at these meetings is an important Training Objective.
