As part of the national recruitment process, successful candidates will be offered an initial two year rotation to cover intermediate training. During this time trainees will be placed in hospitals that can deliver all the required units of training. There are seven units of training at intermediate level

  • Anaesthesia for neurosurgery, neuroradiology and critical care
  • Cardiothoracic anaesthesia and cardiocritical care
  • Obstetrics
  • Paediatrics
  • Pain medicine
  • Intensive care medicine
  • General Duties – this consists of
    • Airway management
    • Critical incidents
    • Day surgery
    • General, urological and gynaecological surgery (incorporating peri-operative care of the elderly)
    • Head, neck, maxillo-facial and dental surgery
    • Management of respiratory and cardiac arrest
    • Non-theatre
    • Orthopaedic surgery (incorporating peri-operative care of the elderly)
    • Perioperative medicine
    • Regional
    • Sedation
    • Transfer medicine
    • Trauma and stabilisation

 

Where is Intermediate Training carried out?

The majority of general duties, plus obstetrics, pain medicine and paediatrics will be delivered evenly between DGH and teaching hospitals.

Intensive care medicine will be at either the Royal Free or UCH. This must be for a period of three month’s whole time equivalent.  LTFT trainees may do 4 or 5 calendar months of ICM depending on their percentage worked.

Anaesthesia for neurosurgical care will be delivered either at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Queen Square or at Barking Havering and Redbridge (Romford Hospital).
Cardiothoracic anaesthesia & critical care will be at Barts Cardiac, Harefield or the Brompton. The majority of trainees will be expected to complete intermediate & higher cardiothoracic training se-quentially within a six month attachment around the transition from ST4 to ST5.
